Since 1992, the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the Muslim American Society (MAS-SFBA) has been an active grassroots, community organization that works to educate, organize, and empower the Muslim community to be active, contributing citizens who play a significant role towards positive social and spiritual change.
The MAS Bay Area Chapter is one of about 50 MAS membership-based chapters across the U.S. MAS Chapters subscribe to a comprehensive, balanced, moderate, movement oriented vision of Islam in America that is based on self-development (Tarbiyah) and focuses on empowering the community and leadership through service.
MAS is a pioneering Islamic revival and reform organization that offers unique programs and services that impart Islamic knowledge, promote community service, and engage in political activism.
We strive to:
- teach young Muslims social responsibility and equip them for leadership;
- educate and organize the Muslim community towards civic engagement, and;
- develop interfaith and inter-community understanding and cooperation, and create coalitions on issues of shared concern.
To move people to strive for God-consciousness, liberty and justice, and to convey Islam with utmost clarity.
To be a leading organization that develops individuals Islamically and intellectually to be of service to the community at large.
The Muslim American Society (MAS) traces its historical roots back to the call of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him). Its more recent roots, however, can be traced to the Islamic revival movement, which evolved at the turn of the twentieth century.
Mindful of the dynamic changes that are taking place within the Muslim community and its surroundings, and keeping an eye on the future, a number of Islamic workers and Islamic movement followers decided in 1992, after a painstaking measured and tedious process of soul-searching and consultation, to launch the Muslim American Society (MAS) in order to complement the work accomplished over the last three decades, and to lay the ground for the Islamic effort needed to face the next century’s challenges.
The Qur’an is more than just a book. It is a force strong enough to change the trajectory in one’s life. Inaugurating this energy into a young person’s life and inculcating its love takes special care. Contestants in MAS Bay Area’s Annual Qur’an Quest compete for prizes while learning about the Qur’an.
Camp is a chance for kids, teenagers, and young professionals to escape the everyday pressures and distractions. It is a detoxifying open door to new adventures, to discover purpose, and to consider the future. Camp can be life changing. MAS camps provide campers with positive role models and a demonstration of love for Islam.
Each year, MAS Bay Area members join to bring smiles to faces of Bay Area kids in need by donating hundreds of backpacks filled with school supplies. Since 2011, the distribution outreach has provided thousands of backpacks – each packed with folders, binder paper, colored pencils, glue sticks, and more.
